Life After Retinoblastoma – The Positive Focus

Retinoblastoma Focus aims to highlight the positive side of retinoblastoma.

There’s a lot of depressing and frightening information about retinoblastoma out there on the net. But what happens after retinoblastoma, when treatment is finished? Where are all the uplifting and inspirational survival stories?

On this site, you’ll read stories of hope. You’ll see the other face of retinoblastoma.

The best form of support for people coping with a diagnosis of retinoblastoma, or adapting to life afterwards with vision loss or blindness is through the sharing of personal stories. This is what I hope to bring to you on this site.

Tell Me Your Story

If you’re a parent of a child with retinoblastoma, how did you cope? What helped you the most during that distressing time?

How is your child handling school with limited or no vision?

If you’re an adult survivor, how have you coped without normal vision? What have you done with your life?

By sharing your story, you’re passing on hope to others who are not yet past the major hurdle – fighting the cancer and getting out the other side. Your story can give others something to aim towards.

These stories will be on site soon.

My Story

I am an adult retinoblastoma survivor in Australia. Diagnosed with advanced retinoblastoma of both eyes back in the ’60s when treatment options were limited and pretty experimental, I count myself lucky to be alive.

My right eye had to be removed at thirteen months of age, and radiotherapy treatment given to my left eye. I was left with very little sight in my left eye for many years, until I turned thirty-three, when I lost my sight totally.

I’ve written about my life story in ‘Beyond the Red Door’. Click here for more details on that.

Australian Resources

For those of us in Australia, it’s hard to find out much about retinoblastoma in our country. I’ve gathered together what I can. If you know of any other Australian supports and contacts, feel free to drop me a line so I can add them to the list.

Click here to go to the Australian Resources Page.

International Resources

there’s some very useful information from other countries. I’m listing them here as well. Again, if I’ve missed something, let me know and I’ll add it.

Watch This Space!

Down the track, Retinoblastoma Focus will feature current medical information on retinoblastoma, specific to Australia and internationally. So keep an eye on this section.
